Simply Glyphed - An XChat Theme

There are not too many text event themes for XChat, and most of them are very out of date. This theme is designed for XChat 2.8.x, and creates "icons" for text events using certain Unicode Characters. The theme is named "Simply Glyphed" because:

  1. The theme isn't horribly complex, it doesn't make use of Graphics like the Eye Candy theme (partly because it can't, since I don't run windows, but more because I don't like graphics in my IRC session)
  2. The theme uses certain Glyphs, or specific forms to characters. This theme does not look correct in many Unicode fonts, as the U+25AC Black Rectangle character spacing isn't the same.

Installation

Provided is a zip file that contains a colors.conf and a pevents.conf file. You do not need the colors.conf file if you don't want my color scheme (I find that black on grey is very easy on my eyes, and so the colors are based around this concept). There are two ways to install the text events, the first you do within xchat, the second, you would have to close out of xchat before installing.

Method A:

  1. Extract the pevents.conf file from the zip to anywhere on your hard drive.
  2. In XChat, go to Settings -> Advanced -> Text Events.
  3. Click on "Load From..." and browse to where you extracted pevents.conf to.
  4. Select the File, and then Press OK, and OK.

Method B:

  1. Close XChat
  2. Extract pevents.conf (and optionally colors.conf) to your XChat profile directory
  3. Restart XChat

Font Specific Information

Personally, I like fixed width fonts, and so this theme was designed while using DejaVu Sans Mono Book. Other fonts will work, below is a list of Unicode fonts I have tested that both work, and don't work.

Work:

Sometimes Work:

  • Century Gothic - This may work. It worked for me under Linux, but not Vista.

Don't Work:

Arabic Typesetting, Arial, Arial Narrow, Arial Rounded MT Bold, Arial Unicode MS, Baskerville Old Face, Book Antiqua, Bookman Old Style, Cabria, Candara, Century, Century Schoolbook, Comic Sans MS, Consolas, Constantias, Corbel, Cordia New Cordiaupc, Courier New, DejaVu Sans, DejaVu Serif, Euphemia, Franklin Gothic Book, FreeMono, FreeSans, FreeSerif, Garamond, Georgia, Lucida Bright, Lucida Console, Lucida Sans, Lucida Sans Typewritter, Lucida Sans Unicode, Microsoft Sans Serif, Nimbus Roman No9, Nimbus Sans L, Tahoma, Verdana, Vrinda

This list is by far not exhaustive, and if there is a font you find that works, please, let me know. I like fixed width, but that doesn't mean everyone does.

If someone creates a variable width font modification for one of the Free fonts (as in, a legal modification) that works with Simply Glyphed, I would be happy to hear about it. DejaVu does provide the source files for FontForge.
